GRAT's music is like the soundtrack to a lucid dream. It’s a jiggy pop jive from a parallel dimension. It’s an experiment that rips you out of your seat and throws you into the middle of the dance floor. It’s a meditation, created in a semi-improvised way and heavily influenced by the literary genre of magic realism… the hushed whispers of the libraries of Borges, the drone from the basement of a House of Leaves, traditionals from Lovecraft Country, and packing the songbook for a roadside picnic…
GRAT draws from a long musical tradition and from the two musicians’ meandering careers through electronic, jazz, blues, noise, industrial and scores for film and theater.
GRAT features both artists on the Buchla 200e Electric Music Box, a unique and rare electronic instrument that created a paradigm shift for electronic music when it (and its predecessors) hit the limelight.
Only a small number of musicians have tried and even fewer managed to master the Buchla, but Kai Niggemann and Henning Pertiet are two of the few artists currently working on the platform.
In addition to their collective concerts, they perform lecture performances where they illustrate and comment, interpret and narrate the story and history of their style in music and their otherworldly instrument.
Rabih Beaini (record label/collaborator with Buchla legend Charles Cohen)
The album has really great sounds and I like this combination of Kai and Henning, on 2 Buchlas. makes sense. and it works well.
